Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, New York, has opened an autism-friendly ER room, something that’s been much needed, according to the hospital’s emergency department director, Dr. Arun Nandi.
“These are children who have been unable to communicate their needs, their fears, effectively not because it’s their fault but because we didn’t have the tools to reach out to them,” Nandi told CBS Albany.
The new pediatric care unit has soothing decor, weighted blankets to calm the children and iPads to help them communicate. There’s also enough space for family members to stay and comfort their children.
